What is BIS-ISI registration?
BIS-ISI registration is the licence that allows a manufacturer to print the ISI mark on a product. The licence is granted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the BIS Act, 2016, after the product passes testing against its Indian Standard (IS) and the factory is inspected.
For a growing list of products – electrical accessories, cables, steel, cement, helmets, pressure cookers, toys and many more – the Government has issued Quality Control Orders (QCOs) that make the ISI mark compulsory. For these products there is no option: no licence, no sale.
For other products the ISI mark is voluntary, but many Mumbai manufacturers still apply because government tenders, large EPC contractors and e-commerce marketplaces increasingly ask for it.
Who needs an ISI licence in Mumbai?
